Performing Arts Scene in New York City

The staff at Otels hope you enjoy the following Tourism Idea in NYC. Best wishes on your next trip!

The performing arts scene in New York City draws tourists to Broadway, Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. But native New Yorkers know of a vibrant world of performance spaces beyond. This includes Off-Broadway (and Off-Off-Broadway) theater, small opera companies, and student performances at leading conservatories. Here are a few favorites:

Atlantic Theater Company

Founded by playwright David Mamet and actor William H. Macy, the Atlantic offers plays by a mix of new and established writers, including occasional revivals of long-forgotten classics. www.atlantictheater.org

Irish Repertory Theater

The Irish Rep focuses on works by Irish and Irish-American master playwrights, but also includes plays by a variety of other authors, plus new adaptations of well-known books and films. www.irishrep.org

Mint Theater Company

Its website proclaims, “Lost plays found here.” The Mint’s mission is to present “worthy but neglected plays” that, while still relevant and thought-provoking today, inexplicably have not been staged for decades. www.minttheater.org

Amato Opera

Founded in 1948, the Amato Opera offers an intimate setting that seats just over 100. While it lacks the star power and grand scale of the Metropolitan Opera, its charm and spirit of fun have won it many loyal fans. www.amato.org

The Juilliard School

The premier music conservatory in the U.S., Juilliard also has renowned dance and drama divisions. There is a daily schedule of free music recitals during the academic year, open to the public. Additionally, Juilliard’s orchestra, drama division, opera company and dance company have a regular schedule of performances that are of professional quality, yet at moderate or no cost. Indeed, Juilliard’s student orchestra makes regular appearances at Carnegie Hall. The Pre-College Division also has an excellent orchestra. www.juilliard.edu

The Manhattan School of Music

Occupying Juilliard’s former site near Columbia University, the Manhattan School of Music is the other major music conservatory in the city, with its own extensive schedule of excellent but inexpensive (or free) student performances. www.msmnyc.edu
