Transportation Tips
Arriving by Plane:
Philadelphia International Airport is 8 miles south of downtown
Philadelphia (also known as "Center City"). A one-way cab fare
costs $20. You can also take the R1 Regional Rail Line to the airport.
International Airport Information: 215-937-6937. Internet:
www.phl.org
Trains: Philadelphia is served by Amtrak, which offers
train service across the United States.
Phone: 1-800-USA-RAIL. Internet:
www.amtrak.com. Amtrak’s main train station in
Philadelphia is 30th Street Station.
Getting to New York: New York City is accessible by
Amtrak as well as by Greyhound, Peter Pan, and the Chinatown buses.
You can also take the SEPTA Regional Rail Line (R7) from Philadelphia
to Trenton, New Jersey, and from Trenton take a local NJ Transit train
all the way to New York. The round trip cost via the Chinatown
buses is $20.00 compared to about $24.00 via SEPTA/NJ Transit (if you
have a SEPTA pass it sometimes is cheaper), $40.00 for Greyhound or
Peter Pan and $98.00 for Amtrak.
Buses: Several bus lines run throughout the Philadelphia area
and to the suburbs. For a bus schedule, visit a SEPTA office or online
(www.septa.com). Fares are $2 if
you pay in cash (just like the subway), or $1.30 if you pay with
tokens. You may be charged an additional fare if you travel outside of
Philadelphia.
* Please remember that buses, subways and trolleys accept only
EXACT CHANGE.
Drivers will not make change for you. A better idea is to bring some
extra dollars and
buy discounted tokens from the machines located at most of the major
subway stations.
Regional Rail: SEPTA has trains that extend around the
Philadelphia area, in addition to New Jersey and Delaware. There are 3
main regional rail stations in Center City: 30th Street Station
(across the Schuylkill), Market-East Station (under the Gallery
Mall), and Suburban Station (next to City Hall). You can
purchase tickets at all of these stations. Tickets are broken down
into zones (the higher the zone number, the farther you can travel and
the more expensive the ticket).
* Please note that buying a ticket on any regional train will cost
$2 more than it would if you had purchased it in advance at a SEPTA
station or from a Regional Rail ticket machine.
Getting to New Jersey: In addition to Regional Rail access, New
Jersey also has a PATCO line that runs from 15th and Locust Streets to
several stops across the Delaware River. In New Jersey, you can take a
NJ Transit Bus to anywhere in that state. NJ Transit’s information
number is 800-772-2222.
Subways:
There are 2 major subway lines under Philadelphia, one running
West-East (Market-Frankford Line) and the other running North-South
(the Broad Street Line). The fare is $2 one-way, if you pay in cash.
Tokens are less expensive and cost $1.30 each, but you must purchase a
minimum of two tokens at a time. You can also buy tokens in packs of
five or ten at locations throughout Philadelphia.
Weekly ($18.75) and monthly ($70) passes are also available and are
good for travel on both the subway and buses. Please refer to SEPTA’s
website to find retail locations:
www.septa.com.
