Roughly 45 miles east of Columbus
on I-70, Zanesville
was once a principal center of pottery making in the
United States. Western novelist
Zane Grey hailed from this small city. It is a convenient rest point
for drivers seeking a break from a long journey across
Ohio, and offers several excellent points of
interest.
The
National Road / Zane Grey
Museum is 10 miles east of town at exit 164 on I-70. Open from
Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, it traces the development of
the National Road, a
major public works project of the early U.S. federal government designed to
open up the west to settlement and development. Today, U.S. 40
traces much of the route of the old
National Road, and many of the states
which it traverses, Maryland,
Pennsylvania, West
Virginia and
Ohio, have it extensively dotted with
historic markers.
The
Zanesville Art Center,
about 3.5 miles north of downtown, offers a delightful mix of genres
and periods. 20th century Ohio
artists are featured, but there are extensive displays of works from
Europe, Africa and Asia. Local
glassware and pottery also a presented in several galleries, and
there are special exhibition spaces.
Sculptor Alan Cottrill
displays an impressive body of work in his gallery on South 6th St.
The man’s story is as interesting as his art. A successful
entrepreneur, he became an avid art collector, then, in his 40s,
devoted himself to the study of art, soon making sculpture his life.
Full-sized bronzes depicting people and animals are his specialty.
Civil engineering buffs should be sure to see the famous
Y-Bridge that carries
U.S. 40 through the center of town and across the confluence of two
rivers.
