FIRA BARCELONA
Fira de Barcelona is the international trade fair organization which holds 80
fairs a year with 30,000 exhibitors and 3.5 million visitors. ("Fira" is the
Catalan equivalent of "Feria" in Spanish and "Fairgrounds" in English.)
Major fairs include the Tourism Show (TURISME), gift and home articles show
(EXPOHOGAR), football show (PLANETFUTBOL), and food and beverages
show (ALIMENTARIA).
Barcelona has two separate fairgrounds: the old Montjuïc fairgrounds with 115,000
sq. m. and the new Gran Vía M2 complex with 180,000 sq. m., which is in the
process of expanding.
The Montjuïc Exhibition Center ("Fira de Monjuic") (www.firabcn.com/location/montjuic.do)
dates back to 1929, when it was the setting for a Universal Exhibition. A
major conference center stands out among the 8 halls on the fairgrounds
here. The grounds are centrally located in Barcelona, next to the Plaça España subway stop,
and back up against the hillside of Montjuïc. They are also just 1 km southeast of the Sants train station (Sants Estació).

The Gran Vía M2 fairground (www.firabcn.com/location/granVia.do)
sits 2.5 km west of its sister venue (Montjuïc) and is thus closer to the
airport. It too features its own convention center. By 2009 Gran Vía will
grow to 240,000 square meters of exhibition space (becoming the second largest
in Europe). This fairground is also easily reached by public transport.
The nearest subway station is “Europa/Fira”.
All subway cars leaving or entering the “Plaça Espanya” station
stop there. The nearest RENFE train station is "Sants Estació", from
which one can take: (a) Bus # 30 and #109 which have stops in Plaça Espanya, or b)
Underground line 1 (red) and 3 (green), or (c) 15-minute walk (down Tarragona
street).
