LOURDES hugs the French side of
the Pyrénées. It can be
reached on the rail line running southeast from
the Atlantic
resorts of Biarritz and Bayonne, just after Pau. (After
Lourdes,
trains then continue on to Tarbes, Saint-Gaudens, Toulouse and
Perpignan near the Mediterranean.) One can also reach Lourdes
via the rail line southwest from Paris through Vichy, Clermont-
Ferrand and
Toulouse.
From
the train station, a single street lined with cottages
leads you into this
picturesque “town of many miracles.” A
spring of water supposedly began
to flow from the rock where
Mary appeared -- and this water is credited
with miraculous
powers of healing.
