  Salzburg Airport  (SZG)

Salzburg's Wolfgang A. Mozart Airport (SZG) is located 4 kilometers southwest of the city center.  Bus #2 departs every 15 minutes (every 30 minutes on Sundays and holidays) between the airport and the main rail station (Hauptbahnhof), with a journey time of 20 minutes. The adult one-way fare is €1.80.  Taxi fare to the city center (Pferdeschwemme) or rail station (Hauptbahnhof) is about €13.

Arriving by Train

Just over the border from southeast Germany, Salzburg is on the rail line between Munich (2 hours away) and Vienna (3 hours away).  From the
main rail station (Hauptbahnhof) in Salzburg, you can take bus # 3 or 5 for the city center (or stroll to the center in a pleasant 20 to 25 minutes.).

   Arriving by Car

Driving into Salzburg on the Autobahn from Germany, you may find traffic jams on weekends in summer, during ski season, and during major holiday periods such as Easter.  If you are staying in the Altstadt (Old Town) or making a daytrip, use the underground garages under the Mönchsberg (Monks’ Mountain). From the Autobahn, take the Innsbrücker Bundestrasse toward the city until you reach the Neutorstrasse, which leads to the garage entrances by the Neutor.

Getting Around Salzburg ... by bus, bike, and on foot

The Zentrum (Center) and the Altstadt (Old Town) are both compact, and an easy, flat 25-minute stroll from the train station. Both sides of the river in the Old Town are now a pedestrian zone (except for taxis).  Since you will want to explore the scenic streets of old Salzburg on foot, wear good walking shoes. For a break, find a bench or a café.  Otherwise, you can always hop on city bus #3 or #5 or rent a bicycle from the main train station to reach the city's center and Old Town.

An adult 24-hour transit pass (24-Stunden-Ticket) costs € 3.40 at ticket offices and machines, or € 4.20 on the bus.
LANGUAGE NOTE: "Stunden" refers to hours, and does not mean "students"!  It includes the funicular to the Hohensalzburg fortress atop the Mönchsberg (Monks’ Mountain).

Sightseeing Tips

The Salzburg Card is a transit pass that also offers free or discounted admission to many museums and attractions. Look for it at hotels and information offices. It is available for 24 / 48 / 72 hour periods ... and costs  € 21 / 28 / 34 per person in summer and € 19 / 26 / 32 at other times.

There are many pleasant cycling day trips you can take along the River Salzach or on a scenic radweg (cycle path) in the countryside outside of Salzburg.  One destination less than an hour by bicycle from the center of Salzburg is
Hellbrunn Palace, a country house famous for its gardens and musical water fountains in playful grottoes.
