When people think of museums with respect to travel planning,
this normally is in the context of incorporating visits to
noteworthy museums during a trip. Alternatively, art lovers often
will make trips primarily to see a renowned museum or a particularly
interesting special exhibition. But how about using a museum or a
special exhibition to help you plan a trip, or create an itinerary?
Take, for example, the special exhibition Palm Springs Modern:
Photographs by Julius Shulman, organized by the Palm Springs Art
Museum and touring the country. I caught it during its run at the
Heinz Architectural Center in the Carnegie Museum of Art,
Pittsburgh. This collection of 100 photographs explores some of the
most intriguing examples of cutting-edge modernist architecture in
Palm Springs, mainly from the late 1940s through the 1950s. As an
architecture buff, this exhibition certainly has me thinking about
visit to Palm Springs.

Springs see:

For
Immediate Travel Action: special tours of modernist architecture
in Palm Springs, CA are scheduled for January 22-24, 2010 and
February 12-21, 2010.
Another
recent outstanding example of a museum exhibition that helps spawn
travel ideas was the blockbuster Frank Lloyd Wright show at
New York’s Guggenheim Museum, the centerpiece of that
Wright-designed building’s 50th anniversary celebration
in 1959.
The
Museum of the City of New York has an exhibition, running
through January 31, 2010, of the work of Eero Saarinen, whose
signature works include the Gateway Arch in St. Louis,
Dulles Airport outside Washington, DC, the old TWA Terminal
at JFK Airport in New York, and Ingalls Rink at Yale
University in New Haven, CT, among others.
Additionally, photographic exhibitions at museums and art galleries
often are excellent means for embarking upon vicarious tours of
far-off places that you someday may wish to experience in person.
